Lubbing Ljubljana - 9.19.06

The 14 hour train ride from Sarajevo to Ljubljana by way of Zagreb was mostly uneventful. It was horrendously long but i did have a good chat with Mirsad from Bosnia who lives in london and is a chief engineer for Panasonic. Later on the trip i shared a cabin with 2 english guys and an australian woman and we talked about graphic design (one guy was a designer), travel and football...AWESOME!

Arrived in Ljubljana around midnight and made my way to the Hostel Celica which was only a 10 minute walk away. The hostel is a former military prison done up in a Bohemian sort of way. Its fantastic. I was in a dorm room with about 10-12 other people which was pitch black when i walked in. I put on my head lamp and proceeded to walk around the room looking for the one free bed. After no doubt waking some people up (who must have thought that the hostel was under some sort of covert attack by not so convert person...i tripped over a pair of jeans) i finally found my bed. Unfortunately as i found out a few hours later it was in between two of the heaviest snorers/deepest sleepers since Rip Van Winkle. I even had ear plugs in. These people brought snoring to whole new level way beyond that off spencer or frodo...i guess they were early risers as i finally got some sleep at 6am.

After waking up and breakfast i headed to the train station to get my ticket out of here. Once that had been done i started to stroll around Ljubljana. Its an amazing city. First its alot of fun to pronouce and when you do you feel all important worldly like (lube-lee-ah-nah). Second its very different from the rest of former yugoslavia. Its more like switzerland and austria then serbia or bosnia. Its perfect for strolling around in and stopping for beers or espresso's in cafes and bars. The river splits the town in half and the main hustle bustle seems to happen on either banks. There is a castle in the center of town which is quite a steep hike but not that impressive once you get there.

After lunch i headed toward Tivoli park passing by some impressive graffiti on the way there. The park is fanastic in the same way Kalemegdan park was in Belgrade. Perfect for strolling, taking naps or trail running. The park quickly changes woods with many hiking trails. I just started walking and following trails lost in my thoughts. when i finally emerged from the woods i was quite a ways out of town...oops. an hour later, weary legs and all i ended up at the hostel. I needed to do laundry in a serious way but the only washing machine was broken. wondering what to do i walked into our door room straight into a wet bra...turns out some british girls needed to do laundry as well and were using the rafters as a dryign rack. I used some of there soap and di my laundry in the sink...though i thoughtfully placed my underwear so it wouldn't smack people in the face.

Tomorrow i'm going to take a day trip and head off to Bled which i hear is supposed to eb gorgeous.
